Abstract:
Some 25% of those pre-diagnosed by doctors in primary care and pediatrics are misdiagnosed with ADHD (Attention Deficit and Hyperactivity Disorder).
Some of the best expert psychiatrists specializing in the diagnosis and treatment of ADHD (Attention Deficit and Hyperactivity Disorder) which affects 7% of children and 5% of adults, according the World Health Organization, will meet in the hotel Vincci on June 18th.
According to the coordinator of this group of specialists, who represents most of the psychiatrists with the Spanish name GEITDAH, an abbreviation in Spanish that corresponds to the name "Special Interest Group on ADHD, more than 25% of the people psychiatrists receive with a pre-diagnosis of ADHD by primary care physicians and pediatricians are misdiagnosed. "Child psychiatrists are the specialists who should diagnose and treat these children and adults, and some 25% of possible diagnoses that come with a "possible" ADHD diagnosis(Attention Deficit and Hyperactivity Disorder) are wrong. For the psychiatrists who will meet tomorrow this is because ADHD has a 75% co-morbidity with other psychiatric disorders and is not the same to treat a child with ADHD and depression as it is to treat adults with ADHD and anxiety, these specialists say.
For that reason, this group of psychiatrists will meet to launch three major projects. Among them, they will announce the publication of a new guide of ten pages with a consensus on the diagnosis and treatment of ADHD according to the co-morbidities that are presented with this condition. Secondly, they will explain tomorrow why more than 20% of children suffering from ADHD suffer from other diseases such as problems with growth hormone, diabetes, and why they also have a hyper-reactive autoimmune system that can frequently cause allergic edemas. "The Ministry has published a guide on ADHD of 300 pages and it is clear that given the results that we have of a " pre-diagnosis error " it is not being read by pediatricians and primary care physicians," explains Dr. Montañés.
And thirdly, Dr. Javier Gastaminza, child psychiatrist at the Hospital Vall d'Hebron, will present a recent study from this hospital where they have discovered that more than 20% of children who have undergone a kidney transplant, curiously suffer ADHD . "This study is revealing that substances such as urea have an influence on neurotransmitters," says Dr. Gastaminza.
