Source: Medical / Date: May 2009 / Category: General Press
Abstract:
According to information published in the Medical Journal(Diario Médico), Dr. Maria Jesus Mardomingo, Chief of Psychiatry and Psychology at Gregorio Marañón Hospital, has gone to the Human Resources Department of the National Health System of the Senate Committee on Health Care in Spain to defend the creation of the Specialty of Child Psychiatry and to request that it be carried out as soon as possible. If the first specialist training spot are to be offered in 2010-2011, it is urgent to give the green light to the specialty areas in order to ensure the proper planning needs are met.
"From the Department of Child Psychiatry and Psychology of Gregorio Marañón we are promoting the unity of various associations in order to bring something about for the families fighting for this over the past 30 years. The commencement of the specialty has a broad consensus among professionals (National Commission and Spanish Society of Psychiatry, among others), but there are issues with other colleagues trying avoid that the commitment of Soria and Jiménez soon becomes a professional reality ".
Dr. Mardomingo is referring to, among many justifications for the introduction of the specialty in our country, to the absence of the specialty in just three countries in Europe. This is due to the failure to meet WHO recommendations for mental health care that would be appropriate for children and adolescents . Right now in our national health system in Spain, excellent professionals have to leave the country in order to specialize abroad since it is impossible to continue their studies in Spain. Most importantly, there is the high prevalence of these diseases affecting approximately 10% of children and 20% of adolescents. According to Dr. Mardomingo only one fifth of cases are diagnosed correctly, anxiety disorders take about 2-3 years to confirm, obsessive-compulsive disorders take about 6-7 years and ADHD takes about 5 years. Dr. Mardomingo, came to the senate at the request of the Platform of Families for the Creation of Child Psychiatry.
